"IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD."

African Proverb

This saying is believed to originate from the Igbo and Yoruba people of Nigeria. But, the idea that ‘It takes a whole village to raise a child’ is fundamental to many cultures around the world. So what does this exactly mean, and why is this embedded into the core values of Village International? The main idea behind the saying is that it takes an entire community, and not just two parents, to bring up a child. Every individual within the community plays a crucial role in the upbringing of a child.

When the uniquely challenging task of raising children is supported within the community, it greatly benefits families and society as a whole. With the efforts of all members, children and families are provided with opportunities to connect, support, and share resources. Consequently, when resources are accessible, available, and relevant families are better able to equip their families with their basic human needs of food, water, shelter, and clothing. When family’s basic human needs are met, they are then able to focus on education, health and overall wellbeing.

Our mission at Village International is to increase the number of children and young women being educated. Education to be the key component to be able to break the cycle of generational and intergenerational poverty, eliminate gender inequalities, reduce the gap between rich and poor, and overall improve health and well-being.
